Birkemeyer, Karen- Crossed over peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday December 3, 2014 at the age of 53 from brain cancer. Karen leaves behind mother Rose, sister Sonja, brother Michael, and the many lives of those she has touched. Will be dearly missed by all her family in Germany and by her 91 year old aunt Anneliese. Predeceased by her father, Frank, grandmother Else, and dear friend Noel. Karen was a lifelong academic, a philanthropist and a pure heart with a beautiful soul. But mostly she was known as a true environmentalist and an animal activist. Her time was spent fighting to preserve the natural beauty of Bronte and this Earth. Thank you to Dr. Kiss at Trillium Hospital, Dr. S. Abawi, Dr. Benjamin and the wonderful nurses and support workers who cared for Karen at home. A celebration of Karen’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday December 8, 2014 at Walton Memorial United Church, 2489 Lakeshore Rd. W., Oakville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Oakville and Milton Humane Society, otherwise, an act of remembrance would be to show kindness to one another.
