ROGER F. WALLER

December 18, 1936 – February 28, 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Roger Waller at the age of 78. He died suddenly in his home, sitting comfortably in his living room chair, following a very recent diagnosis of coronary heart disease. His last evening was spent in the company of his daughter, his son-in-law, and his two grandchildren.

Roger was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1936, son of Frank Waller and Ethel Carlos. He grew up on Long Island and spent the first half of his life in New York before immigrating to Canada in 1977.

His sharp, analytical mind took him through a long and diverse career that included avionics, structural engineering, tool and die, and technical service in various industries. An extraordinary craftsman and problem solver, Roger completed countless building, repair, and renovation projects over the course of his life, often based on nothing more than an understanding gained through keen observation and his fervent enthusiasm.

Roger was passionate about genealogy and spent a large part of his free time researching his ancestry and that of his extended family. In the tradition of his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who all served in the military, Roger joined the U.S. Marine Corps and completed two tours of duty during the Vietnam War, from 1960 to 1963, where the nickname “Gung-ho Roger” and the essence of the Marine Corps stuck with him for life.

Roger was incredibly proud of his children and grandchildren and will be sorely missed. He leaves behind his brother John Kent, sister-in-law Lisa, wife Sylvia, son Jacques, daughter Monique, son-in-law Andre, grandchildren Chloë and Madeleine, mother-in-law Françoise, brother-in-law François, sister-in-law Josée, brother-in-law Gary, nephews Dean, Russell, and Glen, and niece Patricia.

Visitation will be held at Oakview Funeral Home, 56 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville on Saturday, March 14, 2015, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. A celebration of his life will follow at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Raising awareness about heart health would be the best way to honour Roger’s memory. Donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
