Susan Ritson 1925 - 2015
With much sadness we announce that Susan Ritson passed away peacefully in her sleep in her 90th year on February 14, 2015, in Oakville, Ontario. She was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Tom Ritson, in 2002. She is survived by her three sons John, Henry (Emmanuelle) and Richard (Lisa), and six grandchildren.
Sue was born in England in 1925, the only child of Leslie and Marjorie Ricardo, and she spent her early years in England, Malta and Ceylon, following her father, an engineer in the Royal Navy, before returning to England in 1935. She attended school at Downe House in Berkshire, but was evacuated to Canada in 1940 during the Blitz, and continued studies at Hatfield Hall in Cobourg, Ontario. In the summers, Sue stayed with Canadian cousins, first in Ottawa and later in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Friendships and memories made in Canada during this period lasted her whole lifetime.
In 1943, Sue sailed back to England to join the Women’s Royal Naval Service (the “Wrens”), sadly arriving just after her father had passed away. She worked at several Bletchley Park outstations as a “bombe” operator in the Ultra project, among other duties, until demobilization in 1946.
After the war, Sue spent the years living with her mother in Surrey, England, until she married Tom in 1960. Three sons were born by 1963. The family moved to Majorca (Spain) in 1966, and then to Canada in 1968, where Tom took up a marketing career at Canadian General Tower Ltd in Cambridge, Ontario.
Sue devoted her life to her family, and she was an extraordinarily competent, modest, kind, and patient wife, mother and homemaker. In the little leisure time she allowed herself, she enjoyed reading, gardening, and friends.
A few pleasant years’ retirement in England were cut short by Tom’s illness, and they returned to Toronto, Canada in 1995, where Sue cared for him for a number of years until his death. She then moved to Oakville to be closer to son Henry, during which time she took much pleasure in family visits and watching her garden and her grandchildren grow.
A private ceremony was held in accordance with Sue’s wishes. Condolences may be sent by visiting www.oakviewfuneral.ca. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army, the Alzheimer Society or the Canadian Cancer Society.
