William Lalonde, or "Bill" as we fondly called him, passed away on Monday November 10th, at West Oak Village in Oakville, where he had been combating the illness of Alzheimer’s. After demonstrating much patience and acceptance of memory loss, he maintained an insight that set him apart. He had an unusual ability to occasionally comprehend and respond appropriately in the moment, and we were frequently told what “a smart man” he was. He acknowledged his fate with dignity and laughed in the silly moments of life.

Bill was born in Ottawa October 17, 1939, where he grew up with his mother Margot (Guillaume), father Wilfred, and 2 sisters, Joan and Betty. After becoming a Chemical Engineer, he graduated with a Master of Science from Ottawa University. This followed with an early start to family life with his wife Helen (Baillie). Together they had 3 children: Mike, Cindy and Lisa. Their journey started in Ottawa and soon moved to their 1st home in Oakville, where they learned to ski the slopes of Glen Abbey in the winter and serve a ball on the tennis courts of Holton Heights in the summer. With a continued focus on improvement Bill acquired a BA at UofT, when an interest in business surfaced.

While Bill managed insurance for Sunlife he found comfort on the open waters, sailing! After separating from Helen, this was where he and his girlfriend Bonnie Bell spent time together, prior to her early passing from cancer. Later, he partnered and married Diane (McKenna), also establishing a relationship with her children Greg and Yasmin (and her spouse Sandro Rizzi).

Bill had a passion for animals, with many dogs claiming his friendship. Initially Duchess, the beautiful bouvier, and later Winni the sheepdog, became the new partners of his future. With a fondness for nature, he returned to school to study horticulture, where he applied his skills to landscaping. Bill continued to feel at rest in the outdoors, and this was shared with the new friend he found in Doris Pohl. Together, they lived in Mississauga, enjoying outings and events with both families. This included Bill’s children's partners: Sharon (Stevens), Warren Eyers and Scott Eves. His grandchildren: Kyle, Danielle, Shauna and Max. His two great-grandchildren; Layla and Acadia. And, their cherished pets: Rex, Jake, Beau, Tyson, Molly, Jessie, Ben, Easton and Abbey.

In the last 4 years of his life Bill received the best of care in the hands of staff at the West Oak Village of Revera homes. We would like to extend our sincere appreciation for their consistent tender loving care and reliable support!

A funeral service will be held at the chapel of Oakview Funeral Home, with a reception following.

In remembrance of Bill, in lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society would be much appreciated.
