Obituary for Peggy Fernandez Xavier, 1927-2015.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother on Saturday June 20th after a brief struggle with cancer, only two
days short of her 88th birthday. She is deeply mourned by her husband Raymond, her children, Christopher (Philippa), Sharon (Anne), Ellen and Luanne, her granddaughters Sarah (mother Blanche) and Ashley (Cory), her much-loved sisters Deeny and Celine (deceased), Doll, her nieces and nephews in the Fernandez, Ghaus , Symons, Light and Chopard families, especially Karena, and by the friends of her children whom she loved as her own.

Peggy was born in Kuala Lumpur, and lived her married life in Singapore. It was there at the age of 33 , with 4 small children, she went back to school and earned her Bachelor’s degree. She became a medical social worker, and an invaluable member of the renal unit of the General Hospital. After the death of our father, Dr. John Thomas Fernandez in 1973, she decided to broaden our horizons. Leaving all her friends and family, she emigrated to Canada in1974. There, with courage and determination, she made a new life for us.
In 1984, she married Raymond Xavier.

Our mother was a unique and extraordinary woman, who had a gift for making friends with everyone, from the paperboy to a CEO. She was genuinely interested in all their stories. She was cosmopolitan, having travelled to all corners of the globe, and adventurous, never afraid to try new things, and at 87, the best travelling companion according to our brother. She left a legacy of unconditional love, indissoluble family bonds, incredible strength of character, razor-sharp intelligence, friendship, generosity and kindness, for which she will always be remembered and honoured .

Special thanks to our loving Dr. Benjamin and all the wonderful nurses and support workers provided by the CCAC.
The funeral will take place at St. Andrew Church, 47 Reynolds Street, Oakville, on Friday, 26th at 11:00 am.
Visitation will be at Oakview Funeral Home, 56 Lakeshore West on Thursday 25th, from 6:00 till 8:00.
Prayers and eulogy will be at 7:30 pm. Donations may be made to her favourite charity, Chalice.
