Oakville, Ontario - Mary Nakano (nee Jean Mariko Shintani), a long-time resident of Oakville, died Wednesday, the 21st of September, 2016, at the West Oak Village Long Term Care Home. Born December 28, 1930 in Alert Bay, British Columbia, she spent her formative years interned as a Japanese-Canadian during World War II. Determined to make the most of her life, this experience only intensified her desire to serve the Lord.

Mary graduated from Toronto Bible College (now Tyndale) in 1958 and worked for a short time as a missionary intern in Michigan. Later, she became an early member of the Japanese Gospel Church of Toronto where she taught Sunday school, Pioneer Girls and counselled at summer camps.

She married Nelson, a watchmaker from Clarkson in 1965 and had two children, Samuel and Grace. After settling in Oakville, she joined Chartwell Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years.

Mary loved to play badminton, winning competitions in her youth and remaining active at recreational clubs even into her senior years. In the 1980s and 1990s, she worked for the Supreme Court of Ontario as a court monitor progressing from manual typewriters to electric and finally to computers.

In 2007, Mary was diagnosed with a form of Parkinson’s disease which eventually necessitated moving to a long term care home.

She is predeceased by her husband Nelson (d. 1992) and brother Henry. She is survived by her son Samuel, daughter-in-law Miki, daughter Grace and son-in-law David.

Mary will be dearly missed by her sister Jean, brother-in-law Joe and her brother Ted. She was a devoted grandmother to Ronald, Erik and Sophia and auntie to Shane, Rhett and Edward.
